Russia is the number two oil producing nation in the world. In 2006 Russia produced 9 668 000 barrels a day, just short of the 10 719 000 barrels a day produced by Saudi Arabia. It is predicted that in 2007 Russia will become the world's largest producer of oil. This is significant because most of the oil in Russia is produced in the region of Khanty Mansiysk.
Khanty Mansiysk is pronounced Hahn-ty Mahn-seesk; the k is silent! It has a population of 1 432 000. Around 2% of the population are indigenous peoples: Khanty, Mansi, Nenets and Komi. The Khanty are the most populous of the indigenous peoples in the region with a population of 20 000.
We have bought train tickets to travel to the region. Firstly we will travel to Tyumen to meet with some people there and see if we might form a partnership with them. Then we will travel north a further 700 kms to the small city of Pyt Yakh (pronounced Peet Ya(k)h.) Pyt Yakh has a population of 40 000, but is half an hour from a city of 100 000 and an hour and a half from a city of 300 000. We will be away from August 21st to 30th. We have been traveling a lot this year which can be quite tiring, and we still hope to go to a conference in September. Whew.
This trip will be shorter, a little over one week with three days in each of the two cities. Our previous trip to Tuva was difficult and disappointing, so we are being careful to not get our hopes up too much on this trip, but to simply keep our hearts and eyes open.

It seems a long way from Novo - what fantastic opportunities you have to travel in such remote places. Don't suppose you've read Colin Thurbron's travel books on Russian and Siberia. There's probably a lot there that is familiar to you and he writes so gently and thoughtfully, is a very dignified traveller. Hope you are enjoying some warm weather and feeling a bit of the laziness that August in the northern hemisphere brings.
Actually no I have not read any Colin Thurbron. Yes the weather has been lovely, I had a nice hit of cricket in the sun and grass yesterday.
From my vantage point I can see how the one you serve orchestrated your Tuvan trip. All in His will and plan. keep marching on doing daily what He asks and trust the outcome to Him He knows the end from the beginning. and if He brings you to it He'll bring you through it. Hope this is OK to print.?
