In my language class on Friday my teacher said "Today is a praznik (celebration, festival or holiday." I replied "oh, which one is that?" The thing is there are so many holidays in Russia that they seem to lose their significance after a while. Most of the holidays or prazniks are not actually days off. They date back to propaganda times and a method of motivating people.
September 1st is the day that schools and universities go back into session. So the day is known as the "day of knowledge." The day of knowledge is supposed to be a fun day for children to motivate them to study well at school. There are music performances and games. There is a local school close by, so I snapped a couple shots. All of the girls like to wear white ribbons in their hair, hence the picture.
Sadly also, September 1st was the 2 year anniversary of the Beslan siege, where Chech--en terr--orists took a school hostage. Ultimately over 300 children died. It is sadistic and evil that such an attack would happen on children on such a day.
I suppose it is fair to say that such activities only add fuel to the fire of the na--zi activities mentioned in the previous post.
