Here are some more pics from our time in Finland. The horses are Jutland horses (a Danish breed); we noticed that they have very similar hooves to the Clydesdale horse, but they are much shorter. I haven't done any research into this but maybe Grandma Joan and Grandpa Ralph would be interested in doing so.
The other two photos are taken from the top of an old tower in the city of Tampere. During the 1918 civil war in Finland, Tampere was a communist stronghold.

The Jutland horse takes its name from the island of Jutland and has existed for some thousands of years.In the middle ages it was used to carry the heavily armoured knights of the period going into battle.The modern breed greatly influenced by a Suffolk stallion called Oppenheim LXII exported from Britain to Denmark in 1860, a heavy draught horse of massive proportions. It has a great depth of chest and short feathered legs av. 15.2-16hh, very gentle co-operative abnd easy to handle Colour chestnut, but roans , bays and blacks also seen.
The Clydesdales originated in Clyde Valley Lanarkshire crossed with heavier Flemish stallions imported beginning 18th century av. ht. 16.2 hh, bay brown grey black. white on face and legs (of profuse feather)kindly disposition.Good draught horse.
