Ephesus Museum

On Monday we went to the ancient city of Ephesus. Here is the follow up at the Ephesus Museum. It is mostly filled with statues that are not all intact. The city itself was devoid of statues. So one has to combine the images to picture the ancient city. The other piece of missing information is that Turkey was heavily forested starting about 1000 AD, therefore the Ephesus of biblical times would probably have been surrounded by woodland.

Backgammon was a popular game in Roman times. Can you see how the board is set up? Remarkably it appears to be the exact same game that is played today.



One of the biggest baddies of the New Testament was the Emperor Domitian (81-96 AD). He was responsible for the persecution that led to the exile of the Apostle John to Patmos and the subject of much of the persecution within the letter of the Apocalypse, Revelation.



Another baddy of the New Testament was the goddess Artemis. Many of the silversmiths in Acts were upset that people were leaving the worship of Artemis to follow Jesus, and thus depriving them of income for their idol sales.
