It was Melody's birthday on April 12th. We celebrated quietly as a family. I teased her that she is 33 instead of 32 (since Melody did ask me how old she was in the morning), figuring that if she believed me I could close the gap to my 37.
We had a shashlik party yesterday afternoon. Shashlik is Russian for kebab sticks. They are not really the same as kebabs, as they are most often meat only. The meat is often marinated though. Shashlik is the Russian equivalent of a bbq, and naturally a lot of fun. So when you live in an apartment where do you go for a Russian bbq? Well since we live by the forest, we just go find a nice spot to park our rear ends and build a fire. Our Aussie mate Garry brought his "mangal" along. (A mangal is a metal contraption that stands on legs for building a fire inside.)
It was lots of fun to have many different people come to Melody's birthday picnic. The weather wasn't as perfect as Saturday, but we all had fun standing around the fire eating lamb chops (not easy to find in Russia) and reindeer kebabs. We had Aussies, Canadians, Russians and Saha people present. It was fun to have our Saha friends along to meet our other friends.
I also got out the footy and had a kick with the Aussie kids.

Happy birthday, Melody. So lovely to see the beginnings of spring where you are. I know it's such a releif for you all. Spring here is stunning this year - a dry March and April has meant the blossom is absolutely gorogeous.
