Tynda is a city of about 40,000 people. It is a rather important junction for trains in Eastern Siberia. A train line heads south to join up with the Trans-Siberian railway. Another line (the BAM) heads further east all the way to the Pacific at a city called Komsomolsk on the Amur. North from Tynda the train line heads into Yakutia.
We had three hours in between trains. Enough time to check our bags into a locker and check out the town. It has a frontier feel to it. There is definitely some traffic on the roads, but fairly quiet. I liked the feel of the place.
Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman passed through here on the motorbikes in their show "The Long Way Round." They thought it was a wild place, but I guess I have a different perspective to them. :)
