Our week started with a prayer meeting on the Sunday night. Afterwards I decided to go exploring. I bumped into another participant on the street, named Tauqir. Tauqir and I became good friends that week.
When we went exploring that night, it turned out it was the beginning of the Indian festival Deewali. KL has a significant Tamil minority. Our course was being held in the region of the city called Brickfields or Little India. So it was not surprising to discover the festival.
It was a lot of fun to experience such rich culture, especially when it was completely unexpected in Malaysia. The dances are a fusion of traditional Indian culture and global youth techno/rap.
There was also a market place with food and gifts for sale. Deewali is the Hindu equivalent of Christmas/ New Year in the west.
