Merry Christmas for another year!
This winter has been tough going, I have not been enjoying the lack of light (7 hours a day) and lack of sunshine (very few sunny days in the last weeks). I was worried Christmas was going to be cancelled this year! We nearly didn't find any wrapping paper, Melody could not find a turkey, we could not buy a real tree, my family's parcel did not arrive from Australia, our local ice slides did not get built and we had some news on Christmas day that left us feeling confused.
But it's good to be thankful. A friend found us some wrapping paper at the last minute (thank you Lucas!); we had a wonderful Christmas Eve party with 8 friends coming; the kids loved their presents on Christmas day and we had a nice time visiting Aussie friends in the evening. Nobody was sick, we are all safe and healthy. So I really shouldn't complain, it's probably just the gloomy weather getting me down.
On a positive note our party on Christmas Eve was wonderful. We had 8 friends come. Four of them had never heard the Christmas story before. Melody and I shared the whole story with them all, and our Sakha friend Varya helped us too! Our fourth Christmas Eve party in Russia, something which is now a tradition and a normal part of our lives has also become a way for us to share good news. But it was all just a natural part of our lives with our friends that we see often anyway. So all in all it was very relaxed and organic, the very way we have been trying to live our lives.
Boxing Day today was the first sunny day we have had in quite a while. We took the kids into the city centre to see the ice sculptures and let them ride the ice slides there. This was in lieu of us missing out on our tradition yesterday. It wasn't too cold, but a little colder than yesterday at minus twelve.
